Mantzavinos Themis

Dr. Themis Mantzavinos is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Medical School of the University of Athens and the President of the Hellenic Society of IVF Doctors, while he is considered one of the pioneers in Assisted Reproduction in Greece, as his IVF program led to the first child in Greece born from donor eggs in 1987.

Dr. Themis Mantzavinos has passed through all the academic ranks and has performed extensive research work, with more than 360 scientific papers and articles announced and published in Greek and foreign scientific journals, and participations in multiple Greek and international conferences. He specialized in Assisted Reproduction in the USA, and has established and managed various Assisted Reproduction Units in Greece. The result of all of his extensive clinical activity in Reproduction is the birth of more than 6,000 children.

Dr. Themis Mantzavinos graduated from the Medical School of the University of Athens and completed his residency at the 2nd Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, Aretaieio University Hospital. In 1977, he was appointed at the University of Athens.

Since then, he was passed through all the academic ranks: Lecturer, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor.

In 2001, he resigned from the University, 15 years prior to his retirement, so he could dedicate his time exclusively to the very successful IVF Program which he was running.

From 1981 until 1984, he specialized in Assisted Reproduction at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk Virginia, USA, under the supervision of Professors Howard Jones and his wife Georgeanna Jones, who held the position of professors in Gynecology and Gynecologic Endocrinology respectively at Johns Hopkins University for 25 years.

While he was there, he had the honor and privilege of being part of the team under Howard Jones that delivered the first IVF baby in the USA.

In 1986, he founded the IVF Unit at MITERA Maternity Hospital.

In 1987, his IVF program led to the first child in Greece born from donor eggs.

In 1989, he founded the IVF Unit at Euromedica.

From 1997 to 2001, when he left the University, he established and managed the IVF Unit at Aretaieio University Hospital.

In 2001, after reaching the milestone of 2000 IVF births, he was awarded the City of Athens Gold Metal by the Athens Mayor for his contribution to Science and Humanity.

In 2008, he was the co-founder of Embryoland IVF Center.

In 2004 he was elected President of the Hellenic Society of IVF Doctors, a position he holds to this day.

In 2006, he became a member of the Greek Independent National Committee for Assisted Reproduction, until 2010.

In 2007, he was elected member of the Board of Directors of the Jones Institute Foundation in Reproductive Medicine, a position he holds to this day.

The research efforts of Professor Themis Mantzavinos and his associates have resulted in more than 360 scientific papers and articles announced and published in Greek and foreign scientific journals, and participations in multiple Greek and international conferences.

The result of all of his extensive clinical activity in Reproduction is the birth of more than 6,000 children.

The first children born under his IVF program are already starting to have their own children naturally.

As of 01/01/2016, he is the Scientific Director of the IASO Institute of Life IVF Center.
