Dr. Georgios Kontopoulos is a gynecologist and fertility expert trained in the USA, and a certified member of the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Resume

Dr. Kontopoulos was born in New Jersey, USA in 1974.

He graduated from the Athens Medical School in 1999.

He then successfully passed the USMLE exams (step 1, step 2, step 3 and CSA) to become a licensed specialist in the USA.

In 2000, he did a preliminary year in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ.

In 2001, we worked as a General Surgery resident for a year at the Maimonides Medical Center, State University of New York.

In 2002, he became an Ob/Gyn resident at the State University of New York, where he mainly worked at the Maimonides Medical Center, the hospital with largest number of deliveries in New York State, as well as Coney Island Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital. He completed his residency in 2006.
During his residency training, he received the award for “Best Teaching Resident of the Year” and was chosen as a representative of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (District II Residents – NY State), along with one resident from each of the other 11 districts, to participate in the debate of the 57th JSOG meeting in Kyoto, Japan. He has received extensive training in Assisted Reproduction under Professor Seifer and Dr. Grazi, and Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery, under the supervisions of Dr. Khulpateea.

He successfully passed all the written and oral exams of American Boards and is a certified by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology (ABOG).
Has been maintaining his board certification status in the USA since 2009, with annual exams (Maintenance of Certification).

He was then elected Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FAGOG).

He has been trained in Robotic Surgery (IRCAD Strasbourg).

In 2007, he returned to Greece and began working at the IASO Assisted Reproduction Unit.

Since 2015, he is a founding member, along with other prominent associates of the fully renovated Institute of Life Assisted Reproduction Unit, located on the ground level of IASO Maternity Hospital. It is one of the most advanced units in Europe.

He participated in a groundbreaking international clinical study by the IoL on the maternal spindle transfer in women with infertility problems due to poor-quality oocyte cytoplasm.

In 2020, he opened the Institute of Life Infertility Clinic in Kalamata, in partnership with Dr. Georgios Nikolopoulos, in an effort to offer infertile couples in Messinia and the surrounding areas easier access to medical care.

Dr. Kontopoulos is a regular speaker in conferences and educational seminars on assisted reproduction, and has written many articles for Greek and international journals. He is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), the Greek American Medical College (GAMC), etc.

He holds a license to practice medicine in Athens and New York.
